MM Romance Book Review: Immersion Play by Katherine McIntyre

Immersion Play — Katherine McIntyre
Leather and Lattes #1 — 5 stars

A kinky coffee shop in San Francisco with a dungeon downstairs and a found family of kinksters running the whole thing. If that sentence made you smile, you’re already the target audience and this book will not disappoint you.

Micah left his old life behind with nothing but a job tip and a friend’s couch to land on. He thought he was vanilla. He was wrong. Working at Whipped — a queer coffee shop with a very particular vibe — drops him into a world he didn’t know existed and introduces him to Parker, a Daddy Dom with walls so high you could see them from space. Parker watched grief hollow out his father after his mother died and made a firm decision: no one gets close enough to do that to him. Then Micah walks in and turns out to be the brattiest sub Parker has ever encountered, which is, of course, exactly Parker’s weakness.

This is a low-stakes, low-conflict, high-warmth read, and I mean that as a compliment. If you need escalating external threats and dark night of the soul moments to stay engaged, this might not be your book. But if you’re the kind of reader who just wants to settle into a cozy world full of good people, a fun dynamic, and scenes that deliver — this is absolutely your book. The kink is handled with care and enthusiasm, the brat/Daddy energy between Micah and Parker crackles, and the found family surrounding them makes the whole thing feel like a place you’d want to live.

Katherine McIntyre writes kinky romance that feels warm rather than clinical, playful rather than performative. The community at Whipped is diverse and genuinely affectionate, and book one lays strong groundwork for a series with a lot of room to explore different dynamics and characters.

Cute, fun, sweet, and kinky in exactly the right proportions. The series has five books and I already want to read all of them.
